Hilltop Teachers
Hilltop teachers work as a team, jointly planning daily learning activities and experiences that encourage creative expression, stimulate learning and promote a warm and flexible climate for children. Hilltop teachers have knowledge of developmental needs of children and plan their programs to meet these needs.
Full-time lead teachers in most programs have at least a bachelor's degree in child development, early childhood education or elementary education. Most assistant teachers have two years of college, preferably a bachelor's degree. Child care staff members have a vital influence on a child's behavior and development. Teachers who have formal education training and previous teaching experience are selected. Care is taken to select teachers who are qualified to plan and direct activities and experiences which meet the cognitive, physical and social needs of young children.
Part-time Employees
Hilltop hires approximately 70 part-time aides each semester to provide extra support in the classrooms and substitute for full-time teachers in the event of absences. Their shifts often cover the early morning and late afternoon portions of the day helping with children's drop-offs and pick-ups. Their assistance during the mid-day allows teachers to take lunch breaks, attend any meetings, and plan walks, field trips, or other special activities for the children. Part-time employees are first-aid trained, meet KDHE requirements, receive in-service training and are supervised by the Hilltop Program Director.
Volunteers
Hilltop is very fortunate to receive many volunteers each semester. Many are fulfilling requirements for KU courses, sorority or fraternity projects, or residence and scholarship hall programs. Others simply volunteer for their own fun! Volunteers are first-aid trained, meet KDHE requirements, receive in-service training and are supervised by the Hilltop Assistant Director, Machaela Whelan.
While most of our volunteers are KU students, we welcome involvement from members of the Lawrence community and encourage families of Hilltop children to spend time as well.
